Hearth Appliances

The installation and venting of your hearth appliance is a very important part of your purchase. Not only does proper venting ensure operating efficiencies, but it protects the air quality of your home.

Knowledgeable professional installation is necessary not only for proper performance of the stove, but for the safety of your family. The factory trained technicians at Survival Products install everything we sell with the same high level of expertise Delmarva has known us for since 1981.

Each hearth appliance category has specific installation parameters that your hearth expert at Survival Products can provide details about. For a basic overview of each, read on...

Pellet burning appliances do not require a full vertical chimney system, but proper venting is essential for safety, optimal performance and limiting maintenance issues. Venting removes the normal combustion by-products produced during the burn cycle. Most pellet stoves do have a forced exhaust system. Although most pellet stoves are approved for horizontal venting, many manufacturers today suggest some vertical height in the system to aid in the evacuation of gases and to provide the cleanest burn.

Direct Vent Gas appliances are unique in that they not only exhaust their combustion gases to the outside; they also draw their air for combustion from outside the home. Stoves and fireplaces use a co-linear piping system with a small exhaust pipe inside of a larger pipe. The air for the fire enters through the space between the two pipes. Fireplace inserts use a co-axial system that utilizes two small pipes side by side with the same high efficiency. This feature makes them ideal for tightly insulated homes that may not have enough air infiltration to allow a conventional chimney to draft. As a bonus, most direct vent units can be horizontally vented through the wall making for a relatively inexpensive installation.

Wood burning appliances do require a full vertical chimney that is ideally the tallest part of the home. Keeping as much of the venting system enclosed in the heated envelope of the house as possible will aid in complete drafting of the combustion gases. The draft of a chimney is only as good as its ability to keep warm. Today's wood burners are very efficient heaters which means more heat goes into the home and less into the chimney. That's good, but it means the venting configuration is trickier than it was for your Grandfather's stove. Survival Products has the experience and know-how to plan your chimney for safe effective burning.
